Italian Society of Oncological Hyperthermia (Società Italiana di Ipertermia Oncologica – SIIO): Foundation, activities and future projects to develop thermotherapy and hyperthermia in Italy

The Italian Society of Oncological Hyperthermia (SIIO) was founded in September 2023 to promote oncological hyperthermia in Italy and develop it on the national territory to better serve cancer patients (CP).
Methods
SIIO is recruiting up to now 20 centres including public hospitals and private clinics. All hyperthermia centres have adhered to the proposed statute and code of ethics of SIIO. The following themes were approved and proposed:
- To promote dissemination of knowledge in Thermotherapy and related fields through publications, meetings and educational symposia.
- To encourage the advancement of Hyperthermia in all areas of medical sciences.
- To facilitate cooperative research among the disciplines of physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, and medicine in the study of the properties and effects of Hyperthermia in Medicine including limb and visceral hyperthermic perfusions, Laser treatments and Radiofrequency ablations.
- To organize a national database regarding tumours treated with hyperthermia: type, stage, line of therapy, therapeutic results, toxicities and survival.
- To define new integrated protocols (Phase II and III) of chemo-hyperthermia, radio-hyperthermia, immuno-hyperthermia, and palliative medicine-hyperthermia.
Results
The collections of the preliminary data obtained are being processed. Approximately three thousand patients are treated with hyperthermia every year in Italy (86% in private clinics, 14% in public hospitals), all in the metastatic phase relapsing after chemotherapy and radiotherapy with a life expectancy ranging from 3 to 24 months.
Each patient received an average of eleven hyperthermia sessions (range 3-28) utilizing different types of hyperthermia devices: Andromedic, Oncotherm, BSD, Celsius, Syncrotherm. The duration of treatment was 55 minutes, with 2-3 weekly sessions. 50% of CP received single chemotherapy at personalized doses and 90% received integrative and supportive therapies. Particular attention was given to evaluating the improvement in patients’ quality of life using the ESAS scale.
Conclusions
SIIO aims to expand the therapeutic paradigm through the numerical increase of hyperthermia centres and the training of expert doctors, technicians, and nurses. SIIO intends to collaborate with the Italian Ministry of Health and medical associations to provide truthful information and optimize costs, facilitating patient access to hyperthermic treatments across National Territory and European Nations.
